Lewis Hamilton could be denied Adrian Newey dream as surprise F1 team swoops in

Adrian Newey is leaving Red Bull and Ferrari are the favourites to sign him but, as much as Lewis Hamilton wants to team up with the F1 design legend, other outfits are also interested

Williams have held talks with Adrian Newey and could yet beat Ferrari to the legendary designer’s signature.

Red Bull announced this week that Newey will leave early next year. It comes several days after the 65-year-old told colleagues of his desire to quit the team, and negotiations between them over cutting short his contract.

He is expected to take some time to mull his options before committing to any new projects. But already Newey is being heavily linked with a move to Ferrari, having resisted the Italians’ advances on several occasions in the past.

But Aston Martin are also keen to sign the car design guru and extended an offer to him in March. And, as first reported by RacingNews365, Williams have also entered the race.

Newey enjoyed enormous success while working for the Grove-based squad in the 1990s and built five title-winning cars during that period. And current team principal James Vowles is keen on bringing him back into the fold.

He told Autosport: “I’ve known Adrian for a while anyway, and I spoke to him Friday. I’m sure we’ll be talking again, very shortly as well.

“He is an icon of our sport. There is no doubt about it. Every team he’s been to since Williams has been championship material. And that’s not a coincidence, that is just simply the effect he has on the sport. It would be remiss of me to not be talking to him. It is as simple as that.”
