If you’re any f*cking good, they wouldn’t be double teaming me” – Cedric Maxwell shares a heated exchange that happened between Larry Bird and Pete Maravich

Larry Bird disrespectfully talked back to Pete Maravich during a playoff game after being told to pass the ball.

Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird made his mark and was someone known never to back down to anyone – not even his teammates. Furthermore, the 12-time All-Star was a player who would not hold back even if it reached the point he was disrespecting any player who had already made his mark.

When Bird entered the NBA in 1979, hardly anyone paid attention to him; he was a rookie, and NBA freshmen would normally be at the mercy of veterans. The former Indiana State Sycamore player stood his ground and even had a game where he disrespectfully sounded off on NBA legend Pete Maravich.

Former Celtics teammate Cedric Maxwell shared a particular story, a fiery exchange between Bird and Maravich in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers when he spoke on Showtime with Coop via NBA History & Storytellers on CLNS.

“We had Pete at the end of his career, and we had Larry in the beginning stages of his career. So Pete passes the ball to Larry. Pete’s man runs down and double-teams Larry. Larry puts up some f*cked-up shot that goes astray. We come back to the bench, and Pete goes: “Larry, Larry, you’re being double-teamed, man. You got to pass the ball,” Maxwell recalled.

That did not sit well with Bird, and the 6’9″ forward ended up responding to a disrespectful tone to the “Pistol.”

Larry looked up and said: “If you’re any f*cking good, they wouldn’t be double-teaming me. I was thinking in my mind, that’s gonna leave a mark,” Maxwell stated.

Maxwell added that both were able to work things out in the end and that it all cropped up because of the competitive nature of the two Hall of Famers.
