8 LIV golf stars withdraw from Masters as sports world intensifies amid civil war
Augusta National will host his first major event of 2024, the Masters, which brings together professional golfers from LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. However, the contingent representing LIV is smaller than before. Compared to last time, the number of LIV golf players participating in this year’s Masters has decreased significantly.
Of the 88 golfers waiting to play at Augusta, only 13 are in the league. That number is lower than last year’s total of 21 players, despite the debuts of new players such as Adrian Melonk and defending champions Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson, and Sergio Garcia are here thanks to lifetime exemptions as past winners, as is Rahm. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith have been enjoying their status as big winners lately. Hatton, Melonk and Joaquin Niemann also benefited from recent performances, but that leaves eight players behind them. LIV golf stars who will miss this week’s Augusta tournament have been listed by Sport Base.
Despite winning the LIV Golf Tournament in Hong Kong, Anser will not be returning to Augusta this year. This marks the end of his streak of consecutive appearances at 4. Despite competing in all four Grand Slams in 2023, the former world No. 11 is currently ineligible to compete in any tournaments this year as there is no exemption. Despite securing his first LIVGolfwin in Washington DC last May, Varner will not be competing at this year’s Masters tournament – even though he had placed within the top 30 during his past two appearances.
