Bad feelings:Rory McIlroy’s failures put down to two major problems after PGA Championship are as follows….

Paul McGinley has weighed in on Rory McIlroy’s prolonged major title drought, attributing it to a more competitive field and mental hurdles.

The 35 year old golf star, who last clinched a major at the 2014 PGA Championship, returned to Valhalla the scene of his last major victory – with hopes of securing his third PGA Championship title. Despite showing promise at this year’s Masters and being tied for 25th in Kentucky ahead of Sunday’s final round, McIlroy’s quest for another major now continues.

On the Golf Channel, McGinley pinpointed two key factors behind McIlroy’s dry spell in majors: “There are two issues as to why he is not the player he was back then when it comes to major championships,” he explained. “The fields are stronger now.”

McGinley reminisced about McIlroy’s earlier days: “Back then, he was a young guy forging his way, and his elbows were at their pointiest. It was really a case of, ‘I am on a march to be the top player in the game, so get out of my way.’ He had a clear vision. As you get there and climb the mountain, can you stay there? “.

He praised McIlroy’s performance in PGA Tour events, where his win ratio stands at an impressive 10 percent, surpassing even that of Scottie Scheffler’s 8 percent.

However, McGinley, 57, didn’t shy away from addressing the psychological aspect: “But there is no doubt that there is a psychological build-up from not getting over the line in major championships since he hasn’t circumnavigated yet.

“I say yet because if he gets it once, I feel – maybe not – that there are certainly another three or four majors in Rory McIlroy. It is all about getting the first one. You would have to think that a golf course like this, that he has won on before, is the kind of thing that could ignite him.”
