It’s the fourth quarter, I’m about to bust your a**” – Xavier McDaniel shares how Larry Bird talked trash despite only scoring nine points

Larry Bird is one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA, and his standing as a legend of the game is set in stone for several reasons. For one, the Boston Celtics forward was fantastic on the floor, but he was also one of the most vicious trash-talkers the game has ever seen.

That said, even the best players have off nights from time to time, but according to Xavier McDaniel, that didn’t prevent ‘Larry Legend’ from continuing to attack his opponents with his words.

McDaniel’s revenge game against Bird

Larry got off to a torrid start to the 1989-90 season, with one of his best performances being a 40-point game against the Seattle SuperSonics in early December. For whatever reason, McDaniel’s family and friends thought he was the guy who got cooked by Bird in that game. That wasn’t the case, though, as Derrick McKey was the primary defender on the Celtics legend

Later in December, Bird faced the SuperSonics again and was held to just nine points. But this time, McDaniel was the one guarding him.

“That was the year we got Derrick McKey, and Derrick was on him; I was guarding Kevin McHale,” Xavier said on No Nonsense with Tim Thomas & Scoop B. “Bernie Bickerstaff was like, ‘X, you got Kevin, Derrick you got Larry.’ I said, ‘Oh hell no. I got Larry.’ When my damn mother starts talking to me about somebody scored 42 points on me, he gonna score that s* on me. He gonna score all them motherf*ers on me.”
