Sergio Garcia reveals what his relationship with Rory McIlroy was actually like before his move to LIV

However, Garcia has made no secret of his desire to return to the DP World Tour and even cleared his £700,000 in fines in a last-ditch attempt to secure a spot on the European Ryder Cup team.

Clearly, the Spaniard is eager to recover his tour card and, in turn, increase his chances of featuring at Bethpage Black in 2025.

Sergio Garcia opens up on relationship with Rory McIlroy

Garcia and McIlroy have regularly featured on European Ryder Cup teams together and were part of the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

McIlroy, however, has been one of the most vocal PGA Tour players on LIV Golf’s emergence.

Despite the Northern Irishman’s stance on the Saudi-backed venture, Garcia has admitted he’s always got along well with the four-time major winner.

He told Grant Horvat’s YouTube channel: “I feel like I’m fortunate to have a lot of friends. I have always had a good relationship with a lot of players. On the PGA Tour got along very well with Rory, Tommy Fleetwood, Luke Donald and Rickie Fowler

On LIV, I have a really good relationship with my teammates at Fireballs: Joaquin Niemann, Carlos Ortiz, and Bryson. We are having a good time out there.”

Garcia’s desire to feature in the Ryder Cup demonstrates that he believes he’s more than capable of competing at the highest level.

The Spaniard will be desperate for some sort of agreement to be reached between the DP World Tour and LIV Golf in the coming months.

For the 2017 Masters winner, getting back to playing regularly in world-ranking events is a must. At present, LIV players are being significantly impacted by events not counting in the OWGR, something Greg Norman and Co. must rectify quickly
