Bombshell! Man arraigned on murder charge in golf club killing in Chico

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – Hunter Harris was arraigned on a murder charge with the use of a golf putter on Thursday, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said.

28-year-old Harris appeared in court on Thursday.

Ramsey’s office filed the charge against Harris for killing 29-year-old Austin Robert Olson-Swanick on the morning of May 26, 2024.

An investigation revealed that Harris and Olson-Swanick were staying in an apartment in the 2500 block of Esplanade in Chico with other people, Ramsey said. They got into a fight outside the apartment that morning.

The fight was broken up by people from the apartment and both Harris and Olson-Swanick went back inside, Ramsey said.

But a second fight was started inside the apartment, where Harris hit Olson-Swanick with a golf putter multiple times in the head and neck area, Ramsey said.

At this time, it is unclear what Olson-Swanick’s exact cause of death was because he suffered major blood loss from a puncture wound to his neck by the broken shaft of the putter, Ramsey said. There is a forensic autopsy that is currently pending.

Harris initially left the crime scene but was found by Chico police two hours later and arrested for the murder of Olson-Swanick, Ramsey said.

Harris’ arraignment was continued to June 5 for an entry of plea and the setting of a preliminary hearing, Ramsey said.

The judge remanded Harris back to the Butte County Jail with $1,125,000 in bail, Ramsey said.
