Court documents show golf star Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage and just a day after a PGA Tour win

The Northern Irishman began dating Stoll in 2014 before tying the knot in 2017, and the pair share a child, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, 3. The petition was filed in Palm Beach County State Court in Florida on Monday, and the four-time major winner has called for a respectful and amicable process.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” a statement from the 35-year-old’s team read. “They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

The couple will seek a co-parenting agreement, with both residing in Florida for the past five and a half years. Mirror Sport identifies four things noticed from McIlroy’s divorce filing.
According to the court filing, McIlroy petitioned for divorce on Monday, May 13, 2024. And despite his turbulent situation away from golf, McIlroy managed to lock in and win the Wells Fargo Championship over the weekend. McIlroy completed a stunning final back nine to catch and pass American Xander Schauffele to claim a fourth career Wells Fargo Championship.

“I really got some confidence winning in New Orleans with Shane,” said McIlroy. “Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done. Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit. But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat. I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself

“The split also comes just two days before the PGA Championship at Valhalla, Kentucky. McIlroy is among the favourites to lift the Wannamaker Trophy following an uptick in recent performance
