Larry Bird is an Indiana basketball legend, starting at Springs Valley High School and running through his playing days at Indiana State and the Boston Celtics. He helped the Indiana Pacers reached great heights as a coach and executive. 

Here’s more about “Larry Legend,” who was born on Dec. 7, 1956, in West Baden, Indiana.

Bird attended Springs Valley High School in French Lick, scoring 1,125 career points and earning an Indiana All-Star berth in 1974. He averaged 30.6 points and 20.5 rebounds as a senior, according to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. 

Where did Larry Bird go to college? 

Bird initially committed to Indiana, but left just weeks into his freshman year. 
He later committed to Indiana State, where he played from 1976-79. He scored 2,850 points (30.3 per game), grabbed 1,247 rebounds (13.3), passed for 435 assists (4.6) and made 240 steals (2.6) over three seasons. 

The Sycamores made the 1979 NCAA Tournament championship game, and they lost 75-64 to Michigan State. Bird had 19 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals.

Where was Larry Bird selected in the NBA Draft?

Bird’s playing career ended playing on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, recognized as the best assemblage of basketball talent on one squad. It was the original “Dream Team,” cruising to a gold medal.

Larry Legend 

With that kind of resume, it’s no wonder Bird is known as “Larry Legend.” Before he was a legend, he was known as the “Hick from French Lick.”
